The Metaverse is the next evolution of the Internet, enabling users to create their own virtual worlds and interact with other people from around the globe in real time. It’s like the Internet, except instead of browsing websites or messaging your friends on Facebook, you can enter an immersive world where everything exists as part of a single universe. You can walk down the street and visit buildings, meet friends at a virtual bar, attend concerts by your favorite artists — even watch movies together!
The Metaverse allows people to interact and experience their everyday lives in computer generated virtual environments. People often use the term ‘Metaverse’ to refer to the interconnected network of virtual worlds known as Virtual Reality or 3D web. However, the Metaverse isn’t limited to Virtual Reality worlds. The word ‘meta’ means “beyond,” so the Metaverse refers to a digital extension of our physical world. It’s like an extension of the Internet — but instead of accessing websites and apps through your browser, you’re experiencing them through VR headsets and apps like CEEK that allow you to walk through the experience.
You can see that The Metaverse has the potential to be used for much more than just gaming. Instead of visiting a standard website or Facebook page, the Metaverse is a 3D version of the web where your avatar can walk into different virtual worlds. People can use it to hang out in virtual clubhouses, do Yoga in Tibet, attend concerts, learn, collaborate during business meetings, go shopping and so much more. The possibilities of what The Metaverse can be used for are truly endless.

Companies like Facebook have invested heavily in this technology, even changing their name to Meta to demonstrate their commitment to the Metaverse. As a result, people can now experience their science fiction-like fantasies they have always dreamed of.

The first notable example of this technology was Second Life (SL), which launched in 2003 as a game where players could create their own avatars and explore its world by walking around in real time — much like you would in the physical world!
The world of gaming has been in the Metaverse for decades now, games like World of Warcraft (WoW), where people create their avatars to battle others in amazing worlds is an example. Other notable examples are Fortnite and Roblox. Ultimately, the goal is for the various virtual worlds to connect the way the internet is connected today. No one company or person will own the Metaverse.
It’s easy to see why the idea of living in a virtual world sounds appealing. You can create an avatar and interact with others as if they were there with you in the same room, whether they’re across town or across the globe. Your digital twin can be whoever you want to be. Many talented, but shy people can create careers with their avatars.
Leveling the Playing Field for All: Offering New Opportunities for Accessibility and Global Inclusion
The Metaverse will level the playing field for many disenfranchised groups, who may otherwise not participate fully in the real world. In the Metaverse, you can explore the world without leaving your home. It’s a virtual environment where objects are made of light and sound. The elderly and those with disabilities can experience things that might not be possible in real life. For example, someone who uses a wheelchair might not be able to walk, but in VR they could walk, run, jump or fly around!
The Metaverse offers great opportunities for people in emerging economies to access information and experience other parts of the world which may impact how they view themselves and what they contribute to the global community. Additionally, its advantages are beneficial to the environment, such as a decrease in travel, an increase in remote working, and the reduction of carbon and energy emissions.
What are the opportunities of the metaverse?
It’s an exciting time to be learning about the Metaverse. Just as the Internet has completely transformed the way we communicate, learn and shop, the Metaverse will do something much bigger. Metaverse allows for a whole new level of social interactions for many industries including:

The goal of the Metaverse is to allow people from all over the world to interact through avatars (digital representations of themselves) in a shared space, regardless of where they are physically located.
The Metaverse sounds like Virtual Reality (VR) or video games, but it is so much more! It’s going to be overlaid on top of our physical world. It’s basically an Internet for people, where they can be and do things in real time in virtual environments.
People will be seeking out unique and immersive experiences in the Metaverse, and you could create offerings that will provide them with just that. The possibilities are endless. Anything that can be done in the real world can be recreated in the Metaverse, making it a great place to explore, share and create. The Metaverse is only limited by your imagination.
The Metaverse is so much more than just entertainment. It can be used for a variety of practical applications, from test driving a car before you buy it, to trying out different clothes and learning about the latest technology. Its potential to revolutionize how we work, live, and learn is paradigm shifting. With its visually rich environment, the Metaverse can greatly reduce the time it takes to learn complex concepts.

Not only can the Metaverse be used for these practical applications or yoga and wellness, it also holds great potential for positivity and inclusivity by fostering representation of diverse and empowering characters. Many people are unhappy with how some games objectify or sexualize women characters, but the Metaverse presents a chance for positive representation reflected within these virtual worlds.
